The customer had two Miele appliances misbehaving at once: the oven and the range hood above the cooktop. Daniel went out the same day and diagnosed both on that visit. The customer’s review is the public record of the job; this page explains what a Miele oven-and-hood diagnosis involves, so you know what to expect if you have the same problem.
Why diagnosing both on the first visit matters
Miele parts are usually special-order. Every day between “something is wrong” and “we know exactly which part” is a day added to the repair. Diagnosing the oven and the hood on the same visit means any parts for both can be ordered together, and the repair can be finished in one return trip instead of two.
When two appliances in one kitchen start failing around the same time, the first question is whether they share a cause. We check the power supply to each appliance before blaming either one; a supply problem is cheap to find and expensive to miss (see the microwave record for a job where the appliance was fine and the outlet was not).
How we diagnose a Miele oven
- Read the display. Miele ovens report many faults as a fault code or message. The code narrows the circuit; it does not name the part, so we confirm it with a meter.
- Check the supply and the door. Correct voltage at the oven, and a door lock and door switch that the control recognizes. A door the oven thinks is open will stop heating, the light, or the fan.
- Test the heating elements. Top heat, bottom heat, broil and the convection (fan) element are each tested for continuity and resistance, and checked for visible damage.
- Test the fans. The convection fan moves heat around the cavity; the cooling fan protects the electronics and keeps running after cooking. A failed cooling fan can shut an oven down to protect itself.
- Test the temperature sensor and the control’s outputs. A sensor out of range gives wrong temperatures or a fault code; a relay that never closes means the element is fine and the control is not driving it.
- Steam and combi models: water container, pump and descaling state are checked as well.
How we diagnose a Miele range hood
- Controls first. Confirm the touch or button controls respond and the hood powers up. On hoods paired with a Miele cooktop (Con@ctivity), we check whether the hood responds to its own controls separately from the cooktop signal, which splits the problem in half.
- Fan motor and its supply. Is the motor receiving power at each speed setting, and does it run freely? A motor that hums, runs at one speed only, or stops when warm points to different causes.
- Airflow. Saturated grease filters and a restricted duct make a working hood look weak. We check the filters and the duct path before condemning the motor.
- Lighting. LED lights and their drivers are tested separately; a lighting fault does not mean the fan is affected.
What you can check before calling
- Write down any fault code or message exactly as shown.
- Check whether the breaker for the oven or hood has tripped.
- For the hood: clean or replace the grease filters and see whether airflow returns.
- For the oven: make sure the door closes fully and nothing is caught in the seal.
