The four parts of a repair bill
Diagnostic or service-call fee
What you pay for a technician to come out, test the appliance and tell you what is wrong. Some companies waive it if you approve the repair, some apply it toward the bill, and some charge it separately. It is a price for the visit, not for the repair.
Labor
The charge for doing the repair. Companies price it differently: flat rate per repair, by the hour, or with a minimum labor charge. A second trip after parts arrive may or may not be included.
Parts
Often the biggest variable. A dryer belt or thermal fuse is inexpensive; a control board, an inverter compressor or a special-order part for a Sub-Zero, Miele or Wolf can cost several times more, and lead times vary.
Total repair cost
Diagnostic fee (unless waived or applied) + labor + parts, plus any after-hours or extra-trip charges. This is the number to compare between companies, not the starting fee.
Why a lower starting fee does not mean a lower bill
A diagnostic fee is a small, fixed part of the total. Two things change the comparison:
- What happens to the fee. A fee that is waived when you approve the repair adds nothing to the total if you go ahead; a fee that is not waived is added to it. Ask each company which applies to you.
- Labor and parts pricing. A company with a lower visit fee can still have a higher total if its labor or parts pricing is higher, and the reverse is also true.
Compare a diagnostic fee only with another diagnostic fee, and a written repair quote only with another written repair quote for the same fault. Do not compare one company’s visit fee with another company’s full repair price.

What drives the cost of a repair
- Appliance type and fault. A clogged drain pump and a failed sealed system are both “refrigerator repairs” at very different prices.
- Brand and parts availability. Premium and European brands usually mean special-order parts and longer lead times.
- Access. Built-in refrigerators, panel-ready dishwashers and stacked laundry in closets take longer to service.
- Timing. Some companies charge more for evenings, weekends or same-day visits; ask.
- Number of visits. If a part must be ordered, the repair takes a second trip.

Questions to ask for a fair comparison
- What is the diagnostic fee for my appliance, brand and town, and when is it charged?
- Is the fee waived, applied toward the repair, or separate?
- How is labor priced: flat rate, hourly, or with a minimum?
- Will I get a written quote with parts and labor listed before work starts?
- Is a return visit for ordered parts charged separately?
- What warranty covers the repair, for how long, and is it in writing?
