Why a dishwasher can fill and drain but still not clean
A dishwasher uses two different pumps. The drain pump empties the tub at the end of each stage; the circulation (wash) pump pushes water up through the spray arms during washing and rinsing. When the drain side works and the circulation side doesn’t, the machine looks normal from the outside: you hear it fill, you hear it drain, and the dishes come out dirty.
A blocked filter or a clogged spray arm can produce the same complaint, which is why the pump is confirmed as the cause before it is replaced. Here, the circulation pump had failed.
What we replaced and checked
We replaced the circulation pump assembly, inspected the hoses and electrical connections around it, and checked for leaks before closing the machine up. On many Bosch models the circulation pump assembly also includes the water heater, so the test cycle covered heating as well as spray pressure, spray arm rotation and draining, and we listened for any unusual noise.
For Bosch codes, see E15 (water in the base) and E24/E25 (drain). If your dishwasher shows the same symptoms, see dishwasher repair and Bosch repair. In San Francisco, call our Marina location at (415) 683-0403.
