How a defrost fault turns into a warm refrigerator

Every frost-free refrigerator collects frost on its evaporator, the cold coil that air passes over before it is blown into the compartment. A defrost cycle melts that frost at intervals and drains the water away. When part of the defrost system stops doing its job, the frost never fully melts and keeps building into solid ice.

That ice blocks the air path. The fans keep running but move less cold air, so temperatures drift up and down, and ice can spread into the compartment itself. Clearing the ice alone brings cooling back for a while, but it returns until the defrost fault is repaired.

What we did

We traced the problem to the defrost system and replaced the defrost kit, then cleared the ice from the evaporator area and the refrigerator compartment. With the system back together, we checked airflow, fan operation, temperature control and cooling performance.

Seeing heavy ice in a built-in? Please call before defrosting it yourself; the frost pattern helps the diagnosis. For the checks to do first, see Sub-Zero not cooling. See Sub-Zero repair and refrigerator repair. Another Sausalito Sub-Zero job: same-day repair, August 2026.
